Buying a new home is one of the biggest investments anyone will make in their lives. However, home buyers always have to watch out for red flags and other pitfalls when looking at homes. One of the biggest issues many home buyers forget about is possible pest infestations. The National Pest Management Association says that about one-third of all American homes are experiencing a pest infestation at any moment. Boz Pest Control can offer their expertise in pest control to home buyers so they can avoid purchasing a nasty surprise.

Cockroaches, ants, and similar insects

For insects of all types, you want to keep a close eye out for any of them, living or dead. Even a few bodies, alive or dead, could signal that the home has issues with insects. You’ll also want to look for places where insects can get in. Openings or gaps on the exterior bigger than ¼-inch can provide easy access for insects. It’s also important to check the yard and around the house for anthills and hives. While we don’t have to deal with fire ants around Massachusetts, stinging pests can still be a problem. If you find a nest, you can request having it removed, even if it’s not currently active, and that’s probably the best time to remove them.

Termites

Out of all the pests homeowners deal with, termites are the ones you’re least likely to see when shopping around. Home sellers usually get termite inspections before putting their homes on the market, and for good reason. On average, it costs $2,500 to repair the damage caused by termites. When you’re examining houses, you’ll always want to check the wood parts of the house for damage. If you knock on wood, you may be able to hear a hollow sound if termites have been feeding on the wood beneath the surface.

Carpenter ants

Unlike regular ants, carpenter ants are relatively large at about ¼-inch to ½-inch and are a deep black color. Like termites, they also eat wood (preferably moist) and can damage homes. Most tips for finding termites also apply for carpenter ants. However, since carpenter ants don’t eat wood, so you may find bits of sawdust near their nests’ entry holes.

Mice and other rodents

Mice and other wildlife are easily some of the biggest pests you may find. Although you might not always see them, you can easily see where they were. Tell-tale pellet-shaped droppings, gnawed wiring, and scratching noises are all clear signs of rodent infestations. Be sure to look behind appliances and inside cabinets and pantries when searching for these signs.
