If you’re a pet owner, you likely know how annoying fleas can be for you and your pets. These tiny parasites leap long distances in order to feed off of the blood of larger animals, including humans. Having fleas in your home can be a major annoyance and cause possible health issues. Knowing when you have a flea infestation in Massachusetts is the easy part, but eliminating it is the hard part. Let Boz Pest Control teach you how to identify an infestation so we can do the heavy work!
Your pets are generally the first target of fleas. They’ll often start scratching, licking, or biting their fur much more when they’ve got fleas on them. In addition, flea bites may cause them to lose hair or get reddened skin. When taking a closer look, keep in mind that fleas tend to go for the hindquarters on dogs and the head and neck on cats. Fleas also like hanging onto your pet’s underbelly, which lets them easily transfer onto your floor when your pet lies down. If you see fleas visibly moving between hairs or red and black droppings on their skin, call your vet and ask about flea treatments. Washing your pet in hot, soapy water while using a flea comb is a good first step for treating them.
Fleas are black, brown, or reddish insects about ⅛-inch in length with flat, wingless bodies and six long legs. Despite their size, they can be easy to spot because they tend to move around by jumping.
Just like with mosquitoes, fleas can leave behind red, itchy bumps when they bite you. Unlike mosquitoes, these bites are easy to recognize because they generally only happen on the lower legs and feet. Also unlike mosquito bites, it’s possible to be allergic to flea bites. Call emergency services immediately if you think you’re having a severe allergic reaction.
