Ask a Lawrence Pest Control Company: Bedbug Infestation in Apartment Building

August 6, 2013

A landlord called to report that the tenants in the third floor of her apartment building were complaining of being bitten by bedbugs.

This is a very difficult problem to deal with, and there is a great deal of preparation that residents need to make before any treatment can begin.

  • First, you’ll need to clean out the room that is affected. If that area is your bedroom, for example, you’ll want to clean out all of your bureaus and clear out any clutter.
  • Next, you’ll want to make sure that you wash your bedding and use the hottest water setting you have available. Then, use the highest dryer setting. The reason you want to do this is that bedbugs die when they are exposed to temperatures of 120 degrees Fahrenheit or greater.

We can usually get rid of bedbugs after about two or three treatments. We prefer to perform insecticide spraying because it will not only kill what is in the room, but also any bugs that may be brought back in on clothing or shoes. There are heat treatments that are available, but they will only kill bugs that are inside a room. The insecticide we use is Hollow Point, which is completely natural, not harmful to the environment, and is safe for children and pets.
