There are plenty of reasons you don’t want pests in your home. Besides the obvious discomfort of knowing your home isn’t as secure as you think, pests can mess up your home and steal your food. However, many pest infestations are also capable of causing health problems for humans. Some of these range from obvious itchy bites to more worrying problems that can be fatal in some cases. As Boston and the North Shore’s trusted pest control expert, we can tell you about some of the health problems pests can cause you.
Cockroach infestations can be a common allergy or asthma trigger. They’re known for carrying around a protein called tropomyosin, which is a common trigger for allergies and asthma. Any part of a cockroach, including waste or saliva, can carry this allergenic protein. Even when your home seems clear of cockroaches, there’s always the possibility cockroach allergens are still in your home.
Getting stung by a bee or similar insect isn’t fun. However, it gets even worse if you happen to be allergic to their venom. Their stings can cause anaphylaxis in people who are allergic to them, and the reaction can be serious enough to cause death. In the case of a severe allergic reaction, immediately call 911 and, if you were prescribed one, use your epinephrine injector as directed. Even if you aren’t allergic, getting swarmed can also cause some symptoms, and you should arrange a doctor’s visit if the symptoms aren’t going away or you’re seeing allergy symptoms from the stings.
Bed bugs are a pest that often feeds on humans when they’re asleep. Their bites often cause rashes and welts on the skin. However, prolonged exposure to their bites can have psychological effects on people. The thought of having something feed on you while you’re asleep and at your most vulnerable can be a terrifying thought. People dealing with bed bugs often feel more stressed and have difficulty sleeping, which can cause other psychological problems.
Wild rats are often known for carrying various disease-causing bacteria and viruses. Some of these diseases, such as the bubonic plague, come from the fleas that often accompany rats. Diseases like these are a big reason to get help clearing out rats when you get an infestation.
Malaria, a disease commonly associated with mosquitoes, isn’t a major concern in the United States. However, we often see a few thousand reported cases of West Nile Virus every year, most often in August and September. It’s the leading cause of mosquito-borne diseases in the States. Basic symptoms include fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, skin rashes, and aching. However, most cases of West Nile are generally mild and go unreported. There’s no vaccine for West Nile, so general treatment is the best option for most cases.
